Why plant science

Gardening teaches more than gardening

Every lesson connects plants to the subjects kids already study, using real examples from our garden and nursery.

Science & observation

Kids form questions, run simple experiments, and watch what happens over days and weeks.

Math, reading & writing

Measuring growth, reading instructions, and recording observations build everyday skills.

Responsibility & enterprise

Caring for a living plant builds patience, and the final week introduces simple garden business ideas.

Free activity

Regrow green onions from kitchen scraps

A quick project to try this week. It's a stand-alone activity and isn't one of the 8 course lessons.

You'll need

  • Green onions with the white roots still on
  • A short glass or jar
  • Water

A grown-up does the cutting. Kids handle the watering and the daily check-ins.

Steps

  1. Cut off the green tops, leaving about 2 inches of white with the roots.
  2. Stand the pieces roots-down in the glass.
  3. Add water to cover the roots, but not the tops.
  4. Set the glass on a sunny windowsill and change the water every couple of days.
  5. In about a week, new green shoots grow back.

Real worksheets for every week

Each lesson comes with a printable worksheet matched to your child's age. Younger growers draw and predict. Older growers form a hypothesis, measure, and record data.

Here's Week 2, "How Plants Drink Water," where kids watch colored water travel up a celery stalk.
